Why us?

We are a growing, entrepreneurial and adventurous firm, yet we take on fewer trainee solicitors than many firms of comparable size. Our emphasis is on quality rather than quantity. From day one you are offered a high degree of responsibility and involvement underpinned by an exceptional standard of training and support.

We have a genuine open door policy and lack of hierarchy. The firm operates in an open, refreshing cultural environment where all ideas are welcomed, listened to and acted upon. Trainees are treated as integral members of the team and benefit by working in a genuinely friendly environment.

We pride ourselves on providing the right area to grow.  Our ambition to provide a more attractive place to work than our competitors has driven us to create new ways of supporting our people at every stage of their career with us.

Buddies

Once you receive an offer from us you will also be given a ‘buddy’ who is a current trainee.  They act as a point of contact for any questions or concerns you may have before you join us.  We have frequent lunches and drinks evenings for pre-trainees to get to know each other, as well as meet a variety of current trainees.  To ease you into firm life we maintain regular communication,  sending out firm updates, our in-house publications as well as giving access to our Intranet site.

Trainee Mentors and Supervisors

While working directly and closely with a supervisor, each trainee also has a trainee mentor, who are there to provide support in any form, whether it be general advice on seat change, or simply an off the record chat.  Monthly lunches with the trainee mentors are arranged to provide the opportunity to meet other partners and to air your views on topics you feel are important.   Communication is a key theme throughout your training contract and to complement the one-to one approach and the lunches, we also have quarterly trainee meetings for each intake, where a whole variety of issues can be brought up for discussion.

Charlie Jenkins

"The main thing that sets BLP aside from its peers is the training. In each department you receive training which puts you in the best possible position to excel. When you couple this with a highly approachable set of colleagues and an environment which expects excellence and fosters and nurtures talent you cannot not fail to realise that a training contact at BLP will set you up for life.

I have found that, throughout my training contract, I have been given a superb range and level of work, a great deal of client contact and, as a result, a large amount of responsibility. Having said that, there has always been the support of my supervisor, the partners and associates with whom I have been working when I've needed it. On top of all this, the sports and social scene gives you a great chance to meet people from around the firm, go out to events and feel part of the team."

Charlie Jenkins, Trainee, March 2008 - March 2010

"I have really enjoyed my training contract at BLP so far - each of my seats have been varied and interesting.  I also enjoyed a 3 month secondment to a client, Tesco, which gave me an important insight into how clients think and helped me to become more commercially aware.

Back at BLP, there is a genuine open door policy which means that you are made to feel like part of the team on a day-to-day basis.  The training here is second to none, with training sessions integrated into everyday learning.  Importantly though, there is a friendly atmosphere and a good work-life balance where you are expected to work hard when it is necessary, but encouraged to go home early during quiet times.  I would recommend BLP to anyone thinking of applying to a mid-size city firm."
